What is Amblyopia or “Lazy Eye”?
It is any condition that impairs vision!
- Cataracts
- Nearsightedness/Farsightedness/Astigmatism
We can treat these forms of lazy eye, preferably in childhood. As adults our connection between the eyes and the brain is already established and therefore may prove more difficult to correct a lazy eye.
On the other hand, as a child their brains are more “plastic” and it becomes easier to train a weak eye to improve their vision.
First, an up to date prescription is required.
The main types of treatment are:
- Patching: the doctor covers the stronger eye for weeks-months few hours a day to force the weak eye to work.
- Atropine: A medicated drop that dilates the pupil therefore blurring the stronger eye which again forces the weaker eye to perform.
- Vision Therapy: In some cases vision therapy may help improve eye teaming and vision in a lazy eye.
Remember eye exams are covered with a valid health card once a year for children 19 and under!
